Pet Planning

Close to 15,000 dogs are turned in to the Franklin County Animal Control Shelter annually, and statistics show that almost 60% of dogs and over 70% of cats entering shelters nationwide will be euthanized. Many of the animlals that are sent to these shelters are there only because thier owner has died or is unable to care for them due to illness.  Fortunately, there are ways for pet owners to avoid these sad situations.

In the past, Ohio pet lovers did not have the same opportunities to care for their pets as in other more progressive states.  However, due to new legislation, on January 1, 2007, we will be able to create trusts specifically for the benefit of a pet.

Before this new law, this type of planning required creativity.  Some options included: making gifts to a human that are conditional on that person taking care of the named animal, or creating a trust that would allow distributions to the human beneficiary only if that person takes proper care of the pet (as judged by trustee of the trust).  Now, however, we can avoid all the "red tape" and create a detailed trust directly for the benefit of your pet(s).

To some, this type of planning may seem like a hassle to go through for a pet, but to others this gives the owner peace of mind.  Certainly, a trip to the local pet shelter will persuade any loving pet owner that the other option for thier animal or animals makes a little advance planning worth every penny.
